eBay sellers will have a greater chance of having their listings reach people shopping on Facebook Marketplace, which could boost their sales. But the partnership between eBay and Meta is one of convenience (or desperation).
That's because Meta is appealing the European Commission's finding that it has hindered competition for online marketplaces in Europe through its FB Marketplace. Meta disagrees with the EC's claim and is appealing, but in announcing the eBay partnership today, said it was "working quickly and constructively to build a solution which addresses the points raised" by the EC.
One seller wondered if the news indicated Meta (Facebook) might acquire eBay, but that would defeat the very purpose of the partnership - to boost competition.
eBay sellers may not care about the reason for the potential increase in visibility, but there are questions about how many sellers will actually benefit. eBay told sellers, "As long as your account is in good standing, your listings could appear on any of these partners, including Facebook Marketplace, based on user interest, shopping trends, and listing quality."
eBay also said, "Listings from a variety of categories will appear on Facebook Marketplace based on factors including current shopping trends and listing quality."
