Top Tips: eBay Listing Title Improvements

Last time, we looked at the Item Specifics Improvements. Today we'll look at Improving eBay Titles and how the length, word order and keyword content of an eBay title have a direct impact on listing visibility, so be sure to invest time in getting this right. In our original Top Tips blog, we used the eBay Store Performance Dashboard to highlight areas for improvement across an eBay store. Among the KPIs reported on, there are two which directly relate to your eBay listing titles.

The first metric, ‘Recommended Minimum Title Length Met’, refers to Optiseller’s suggested minimum title length. eBay titles can contain up to a maximum of 80 characters (including spaces!) and we recommend using at least 70 of those available characters. Where your current title falls short of that target, it shows as ‘Not met’ with the number of listings affected in brackets. You can click through using that number to get a list of the items to work on.

The second metric relates to the keywords used in your titles. Different item specifics related to your listing category carry different weight in eBay search and this metric is an indicator of the presence of the more important keywords within your current title.

In the example above, the seller is using the main relevant keywords but just not maximising available character count – adding in one or two more keywords will improve this listing visibility.

Worth noting the key product information should appear towards the start of the title, ideally in the first four words.

Aside from identifying which items may require title improvements, the Optiseller app offers a number of tools that can help you research and even automatically generate alternative titles and today we'll take a look at these in detail.

Product Suggester

It can be useful to use your competition as a source of insight and a means of benchmarking. You can see what the best of the competition are doing by using our ‘Product Suggester’ tool. Here you can input the details for one of your products and generate a report that provides a list of the top 10 similar items in best match ranking at that exact moment in time.

In the example below, we have searched using the MPN for a set of Bosch Brake pads.

This results show not only category, condition and pricing information for these products, but also give you the character count of the titles and most importantly, the chance to check these top 10 performing listings for relevant title keywords that you can borrow.

Aspect Finder+

Our ever-popular Aspect Finder+ tool is now geared up to help you make title improvements as well as item specific improvements. Recent new features have incorporated both an OptiRating and a separate score out of 10 for the listing title.

Colour coding helps draw your attention to the titles most in need of improvement and once you click into a title, the report also shows the current character count.

At this point you can load suggestions for alternative titles. We offer 2 types of suggestion at this stage. Firstly, titles for similar live listings and also an AI generated title which will utilise keywords from your existing title, description, item specifics and beyond.

You can select and apply any of the selections directly to change your title or cherry pick your preferred additional keywords from across all the suggestions. When you’re happy with your new title, you can either push it live directly to your eBay listing by pressing send or use the export functionality to create a file to use with your 3rd party provider.

Make sure to have already pushed your item specific improvements live to eBay BEFORE using AF+ to work on your titles.
